Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda, is the country’s largest protected wetland and only Big Five safari park. Covering 1,122 km², it features savannas, lakes, wetlands, and rolling hills, providing a diverse habitat for lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species. Activities include game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, birdwatching, and night safaris. The best time to visit is June–September (dry season) for the best wildlife viewing. Entry fees are $100 per day for international visitors, and the park is accessible via a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali. Lodging options range from luxury lodges to budget campsites.
