Black River Gorges National Park, located in southwestern Mauritius, is the island’s largest protected rainforest, covering 67.5 km². It is home to endemic wildlife, including the Mauritius kestrel, pink pigeon, and giant fruit bats, as well as lush forests, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints like Alexandra Falls and Gorges Viewpoint. Visitors can enjoy hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography along 60 km of trails, with routes leading to Macchabée Forest, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (Mauritius’ highest peak), and hidden waterfalls. The best time to visit is May–December (dry season). Entry is free, and the park is accessible via a 1-hour drive from Port Louis.
