Robben Island, located 7 km off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site best known for being the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years during apartheid. The island has served as a prison, leper colony, and military base over the centuries. Today, visitors can take a guided tour led by former prisoners, exploring Mandela’s prison cell, the limestone quarry where prisoners worked, and the island’s historical buildings. The best time to visit is September–April for calmer seas. Ferries depart from the V&A Waterfront and cost around $30 per person for a 3.5-hour tour, including the boat trip and guided experience.
