Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, is located on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Covering 2,700 km², it is known for its stunning scenery, crystal-clear waters, and volcanic surroundings. Unlike many African lakes, it is free of hippos and crocodiles, making it ideal for swimming, kayaking, boat cruises, and fishing. Popular towns along the Rwandan shore include Rubavu (Gisenyi), Karongi (Kibuye), and Rusizi (Cyangugu), each offering resorts, lakeside relaxation, and cultural experiences. Visitors can also explore hot springs, coffee plantations, and the Congo Nile Trail. The best time to visit is June–September and December–February. Lake Kivu is accessible via a 3–4 hour drive from Kigali.
