Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, located in southwestern Uganda, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best places in the world for mountain gorilla trekking. Covering 321 km², the dense rainforest is home to over 400 mountain gorillas (almost half of the world’s population), along with chimpanzees, forest elephants, and over 350 bird species. Gorilla trekking permits cost $700 per person, with the best trekking seasons being June–September and December–February. Visitors can also enjoy nature walks, birdwatching, and cultural encounters with the Batwa people. The forest is accessible from Kampala or Entebbe (8–10 hours by road) or by domestic flights to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips, followed by a short drive to the park.
