Lalibela, ethiopia
The Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, located in Ethiopia, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important religious and historical sites in Africa. Built in the 12th–13th century by King Lalibela, these 11 medieval churches were carved entirely from solid rock and are connected by tunnels and trenches. The most famous is Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George), shaped like a cross. These churches are still active places of worship and a major pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The best time to visit is October–March, with Timkat (Epiphany) in January being a highlight. Entry fees are around $50, and Lalibela is accessible by flights from Addis Ababa to Lalibela Airport, followed by a short drive.
